En 1984, un barco de pescadores se hundió en Islandia, en un mar de condiciones a todas luces letales. Nadie podría haber sobrevivido a esas temperaturas pero, inexplicablemente, hubo un hombre que sí lo hizo (y que fue proclamado héroe nacional al volver a tierra firme). Aquí se narra esta historia evitando los lugares comunes de la típica película de "triunfo del espíritu humano". Y uno de los recursos del director para alejarse de ese artificio fue filmar sin pantallas verdes ni tanques de agua, sino en el mar, con olas de verdad.
