Koji Namiki, un jeune lanceur talentueux, qui avait remporté le championnat national de baseball des lycées entre à l'université, mais se blesse peu après au coude. Lui et ses coéquipiers travaillent dur pour revenir sur le terrain en plaçant tous ses espoirs sur une nouvelle balle lente, "le terrain magique". Cependant, le déclenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale anéantit les ambitions de baseball de tout le monde. Ils rejoignent l'armée et dans la marine subissent la formation sévère qui les prépare à la mort. La mort les attend dans un "kaiten" (sous-marin d'attaque spéciale ou "torpille humaine") dans les profondeurs sombres de l'océan, mais Koji n'abandonne jamais son rêve de "pas magique".
